Gale Winskill began by describing how Floris Books looks for new authors and the style of work they are looking for. They prefer to deal with authors directly rather than through an agency, and are constantly looking for new ideas with storylines based in Scotland or further a field. She advised that when you approach any publisher, always check their book list to ensure your work is relevant to them. Floris don’t commission illustrators for picture books as the cost is prohibitive, although they do occasionally commission artwork for book covers and text illustrations.

Lindsey Fraser of Fraser Ross Associates, a literary agency that began in 2002, spoke of the difficulty of getting work published in the market today.
Publishers seem to have set ideas of the type of work they are looking for, and in a financially led market, they tend to publish established writers/illustrators rather than gambling with new talent. Publishers are however always looking for new writers/illustrators, and so Lindsey’s advise was ‘Don’t give up’.
Lucy Juckes , Director of Barrington Stokes Publishers has a different approach to Floris, in that they are a smaller and more specialised publishers. They produce books for reluctant readers, and consequently, they use more illustrations and often use authors who are well established, as reluctant readers like to read books written by authors that their friends are reading.
